Somehow due to pure grit and determination of the ordinary GI, they were able to get off of the beach. The cost was terrible with thousands of GIs killed that first day. When you look at US cemetery, you will see the horrible cost of victory against Hitler and Germany. All of Europe suffered from WW II and they remember it much better than Americans.
